The police, community leaders, and residents were praised by the Inter Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Migration for the mostly nonviolent protests that occurred around the nation on Tuesday.

The IMC provides the country with comment on the marches against undocumented immigrants, stating that the nonviolent behavior demonstrates the power of the nation’s democracy and that South Africans are free to express their concerns in a firm and legal manner while upholding the rights and dignity of others.

“The government acknowledges that many citizens have genuine concerns about lack of economic opportunities, irregular migration, service delivery, the challenges of border management, and general public safety,” states Mmamoloko Kubayi, chairperson of the IMC Justice Minister.

“These issues should be taken seriously and methodically resolved through legal and democratic channels. The majority of participants’ rejection of violence, vigilantism, intimidation, provocation, looting, and damaging other people’s property is especially appreciated by the government, adds Kubayi.

According to the Committee, police have responded to a few isolated instances of looting and will keep looking for, detaining, and prosecuting anyone who engages in criminal activity during the marches.
