According to KwaZulu-Natal police, at least ten persons have been detained for allegedly robbing and stealing from tuck shops located throughout the region. Marianhill, Mountain Rise, Melmoth, and Sydenham were the locations of the arrests.
Charges against the suspects include theft, intimidation, assaulting police officers, and house robbery.
A few of them are also charged with targeting foreign nationals’ houses and tuck shops.
Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a spokesman for the SAPS, says it is regrettable that some people utilized what he called a legitimate reason to conduct crimes.
“We had informed them that police will be out in full force to make sure that no lawlessness is allowed. The law will now punish ten of them. And we won’t set an example for them; instead, we will strictly enforce the law and inform them that stealing and dragging someone else’s store are illegal. It makes no difference how you approach it. We will deal with you in accordance with the law as long as you commit crimes.”
Netshiunda, meanwhile, claims that police are happy with how the protests against unauthorised foreign nationals transpired around the province on Tuesday.
He claims that the march organisers followed the prearranged routes and that the operation went smoothly.
“We sustained deployments till whatever time was required when we were anticipating numbers and deployed appropriately in the early hours. However, we firmly believe that those who were marching did so in a responsible manner; they did not stray from the path or make needless demands. We are grateful for that. Police officers were instructed to behave professionally and at their best, so when they deviated, we stopped them and took appropriate action.
